The Tour Story

“Welcome to Warwickshire — a county where medieval castles, royal ambition, Shakespearean England and Victorian elegance meet.”

Our journey begins in the historic town of Warwick, close to the imposing walls of Warwick Castle.

From here, we travel through some of the most important landscapes of the county, following the story of England from the aftermath of the Norman Conquest, through the medieval and Tudor periods, into Shakespeare’s Elizabethan world and finally towards the Victorian era.

Along the way, your guide will bring the history to life with stories of kings and queens, castles and country estates, poets and playwrights, gardens, industry and everyday life.

Charlecote Park

Our first stop takes us into the world of the historic English country estate at Charlecote Park.

Surrounded by parkland and associated with the Lucy family for centuries, Charlecote provides an opportunity to explore how powerful landowning families shaped the Warwickshire landscape.

This is also part of the Shakespeare story. Tradition and historical records connect William Shakespeare with Charlecote and the Lucy family, providing an intriguing glimpse into the world in which the young Shakespeare lived.

As we explore the estate and its surroundings, we’ll discuss:

How the countryside around Stratford changed over the centuries

Guide dialogue:

“Before Shakespeare became one of the most famous writers in the English language, he was a young man growing up in this part of Warwickshire. Around him was a world of powerful families, ancient estates and old medieval traditions. Charlecote gives us a window into that world.”

●  Medieval and Tudor Warwickshire

●  The development of the English country estate

●  The Lucy family

●  Shakespeare’s Warwickshire

Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Elizabethan society

We continue to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare.

Here, the medieval market town provides the setting for one of the most important literary stories in English history.
We explore the town and the area around Shakespeare’s birthplace, learning about his family, childhood and the society of Elizabethan England.

Guide dialogue:

“This is where our Warwickshire story changes direction. We have travelled through medieval England and the world of the country estate. Now we arrive in the town that gave the world William Shakespeare.”
The story explores Shakespeare’s Stratford, including:

– His family and upbringing.
– Stratford as a market town.
– Elizabethan society.
– Shakespeare’s rise from Warwickshire to London.
– The world that inspired his plays.
– Stratford’s transformation into a place of literary pilgrimage.

Visitors have the opportunity to explore Shakespeare’s Birthplace and the surrounding historic centre.

Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Gardens

Royal Ambition & the Elizabethan Age

Our journey then takes us to Kenilworth Castle, one of Warwickshire’s great medieval landmarks.

The castle’s story stretches across centuries, from medieval England through the Tudor period and into the age of Queen Elizabeth I.

Kenilworth is particularly associated with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and Queen Elizabeth I’s famous visit in 1575.

Guide dialogue:

“Imagine arriving here in 1575. Elizabeth I is Queen of England, Robert Dudley is one of the most powerful men in the kingdom, and Kenilworth is about to become the stage for one of the most spectacular royal entertainments of the Elizabethan age.”

You will explore:
● The medieval origins of Kenilworth
● The Tudor monarchy
● Elizabeth I
● Robert Dudley
● The famous 1575 royal visit

Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa

From Georgian Spa to Victorian Leisure

Leaving the medieval and Elizabethan world behind, we travel to Royal Leamington Spa.

Here the story moves forward into the Georgian and Victorian periods.

The Jephson Gardens, located in the heart of Leamington Spa, reflect the transformation of the town into a fashionable spa destination.

Guide dialogue:

“We have moved forward several centuries. Castles and medieval fortifications are no longer the centre of attention. Now we enter the age of spa towns, promenades, gardens and Victorian leisure.”

Here we’ll explore the development of Leamington Spa, including:

– The rise of spa culture
– Georgian society
– The development of Leamington as a fashionable resort
– Victorian leisure and public gardens

– How the Industrial Revolution transformed towns and travel
The gardens provide a pleasant contrast to the castles and medieval sites visited earlier in the day.

Chesterton Windmill

Warwickshire’s Rural Landscape

Our final major stop takes us back into the Warwickshire countryside at Chesterton Windmill.

Standing prominently on a hill overlooking the surrounding landscape, this distinctive 17th-century windmill is one of the county’s most recognisable landmarks.

Here we pause to appreciate the countryside that connects all the places we’ve visited.

Guide dialogue:

“We’ve spent the day following the people and events that shaped Warwickshire, but the landscape itself is part of the story. From this viewpoint, you can see the countryside that supported medieval estates, Tudor households, Georgian towns and Victorian communities.”

We’ll discuss:

– The history of Chesterton Windmill
– Traditional rural industries
– Agriculture and the Warwickshire countryside
– How windmills were used
– The relationship between the villages, farms and estates of Warwickshire
Weather and access permitting, this is also an ideal opportunity for photographs.

Return to Warwick Castle

After our visit to Chesterton Windmill, we make our way back towards Warwick Castle,
completing our historical journey through Shakespeare’s County.

Guide dialogue:

“And so our journey through Shakespeare’s County comes to an end. In just one day we’ve travelled through centuries of Warwickshire history — from medieval castles and the aftermath of the Norman Conquest, through Tudor England and Shakespeare, to the gardens and leisure culture of the Victorian age.”
“Warwickshire isn’t simply the county of Shakespeare. It is a landscape where centuries of English history remain visible — in its castles, estates, gardens, villages and countryside.”
